History: Here @ Bulbapedia

Personality: Curious, self-driven, and detached, Colress makes for a unique Pokémon antagonist among the other villainous team leaders. Throughout Black 2/White 2, he assists the player in several ways, giving them freebies, lending them the Colress Machine to move a herd of Crustle, and participating in friendly battles to assess their bond with their Pokémon. Unlike his compatriots in the rogues gallery, Colress's motivations have nothing to do with accumulating power or creating an ideal world — instead, he agreed to head Team Plasma because they promised to fund his research, and he exhibits no attachment to the organisation, its goals, or even Ghetsis at the end of the day. When he appears in S/M/US/UM, Colress's impartiality again makes itself apparent — he appears to be in Alola pursuing his own ends, and even helps the player in Episode RR sending the bosses back to their original universes instead of joining forces with them.

To most, Colress is polite and friendly, sometimes to the point of appearing stiff. He tends to speak in very formal language, even using the pronoun watakushi (わたくし) in his Japanese appearances. While interested in the relationships between Trainers and their Pokémon, Colress himself is somewhat deficient in building and maintaining relationships, especially with other people, and his research takes priority over most other things in his life, including his own well-being. He's not exactly unknown to hole himself up in the lab for days, interpreting data and conducting more experiments until sunrise. For this reason, he's also quite slender from neglecting his self-preservation needs — and if you look closely, there are days you'll see shadows under his eyes.

While Colress normally appears calm and level-headed, he becomes excited when the topic of his research comes up in conversation. That topic is, of course, "bringing out the potential of Pokémon." In his own words:
What I desire is to bring out the entirety in Pokémon potential! If I can accomplish that, I don't care what it takes! If it means the strength must be brought out by the interactions between Pokémon and Trainers, then so be it! If it means you have to use a merciless approach, like Team Plasma's, and force out all of the Pokémon's power, then so be it! And yes, if the entire world is destroyed as a result, then so be it.
Though Colress exploits Kyurem to see how much power can be drawn out of it, he comes to the conclusion after his final battle with the player that bonds — not cruelty or force — are the best way of bringing out a Pokémon's potential. At the Pokémon World Tournament, he mentions that he "[wants the optimal method] to be the trust between Trainers and their Pokémon, just as it has always been." Thus, Colress acknowledges the importance (and necessity) of Trainer-Pokémon relationships, and by S/M/US/UM has fully embraced the idea that bonds are the source of their power.

Headcanons:
  • Colress is currently in negotiations with Interpol to secure funding for his future research. In exchange, they're asking for his cooperation with their own projects.
  • Colress's current team looks like this. He has more Pokémon back in the research lab.
  • Colress's voice actors are Y. Chang in English and Kōji Yusa in Japanese.
  • Colress is a native of Unova and previously worked in Castelia City. He is a frequent buyer of Casteliacones and is generally fond of other sweet treats.
  • He may have been reformed by S/M/US/UM, but in my interpretation, Colress will never stop feeling the temptation to explore alternate avenues of bringing out Pokémon's true power. If something seems to exhibit the potential for even greater success — why wouldn't he?
  • While I've listed him as aromantic/asexual-spectrum, Colress approaches the idea of relationships — as he does most things — with frank and open curiosity. Given the right person, he's interested in seeing what it would take to inspire strong feelings of affection or affiliation in him; he just also doesn't know how he would get there.
